And here we are in 09

This is an obviously delayed post, late is more like it, but nonetheless, I thought I’d say something about the new year and what it means to me.

Well, to begin, I am not one of those people who believe in making new year’s resolutions. It’s just not something that works for me. I find that most of my life-events happen right around the fall. I don’t necessarily know why, they just do. And when they happen, THAT’S when I like to make my “resolutions”. If you could ask anyone who knows me they would tell you that I am NOT a planner. Unfortunate or not, I react to stimuli, and am constantly readjusting in order to make things work a little more smoothly.

But as we all know, nothing is ever really ever truly “smooth”, it’s one of life’s little quirks; the road is going to be bumpy. Not that that’s bad, I like an interesting journey.

A few small observations:

  1. Barak Obama is now our 44th president. Yay!
  2. We’re still at war in two countries: Afghanistan and Iraq. Boo!
  3. There seems to a definite cognizance shift towards the environment. (Maybe just hopeful thinking…)
  4. We’re in a recession, maybe a depression? Colorado is trailing behind in the down trends, but unfortunately we’re moving in that direction as well. A LOT of money has been lost in this nasty period. Bush has done some reprehensible things, but this sub-prime loan debacle is a crime. Our children will pay for this, and that’s not right.
  5. Can the US pull out of this recession? How? Will the surge in the green energy sector provide what we need?
  6. I have been seriously under-motivated at work. I must be bored…It’s hard to put my finger on it. All I know is that normally, I have a pretty decent work ethic, that’s in jeopardy. I need to find something that engages me. I often wonder if it’s got something to do with my age, a middle age crisis?
  7. My girls are 8 and 10 (11) years old this year. My eldest is developing, it’s amazing, and it makes me feel old.
  8. Our dog is old…that makes me feel older as well. I so remember when she was just a little pup.
  9. I’ve (un)fortunately found facebook, and what people mean by “time wasting black hole”. While I’ve got back in touch with a ton of people that I haven’t spoken to in ages upon ages, I find that I spend way way too much time fiddling about with it. I’ve always been a “reminiscent” type person. I like the past and I’m intrigued by it, that’s why I probably have always gravitated towards history. It’s crazy though how many people I’ve become reacquainted with.
  10. I’m 44 this year as well…Huh, I just thought about that: Barak Obama is our 44th president of the US, in my 44th year of life. Coincidence? Serendipity? Numerology? End of the world!?! Who knows, it’s pretty cool though.
  11. I’ve become a fan of old school games: Labyrinth Lord specifically. I’m not certain why, I think that I’ve possibly come to the realization that the new games are a little too constrictive and maybe, possibly, I’m a bit nostalgic. Either way, I’m playing a game with my two girls, (with my wife joining on occasion, if you can believe that!) and it’s threatening to take the place of my normal game, I like it that much more.
  12. I’m still close to Fish, Dave and Wayne. To use a childish acronym: BFF. We’ve known each other since roughly 7th grade, and I don’t envision that changing.
  13. I love my wife.
  14. I love my children, they’re seriously cool people.
  15. I still love mountain biking, skiing and playing Dungeons and Dragons.
  16. I’ve had a very good life.
  17. I consider myself very lucky in many ways.
  18. While I age I gain wisdom, not hugely surprising, but I also seem to have become a little less tolerant.
  19. Both my girls have now graduated from Children’s Music Academy.
  20. Life is good. (There’s always room for improvement, but in general…)

By the way, these are in no particular order.

Signing off for now. Peace!
